Good voice training also includes developing the musical and dramatic understanding
of the singer. I address these aspects in every lesson and in addition offer more
advanced students the chance to sing in Masterclasses.
Coaching for performance is a particular pleasure for me. I have an extensive knowledge
of opera and classical song in Italian, German, French and English, and am also at
home in other lyrical styles such as music theatre and folksong.
I offer masterclasses in central Cambridge on selected Sunday afternoons during term
time. A professional pianist accompanies the singers. Observers are welcome.
The classes are designed to train singers in presentation, stage deportment, dramatic
understanding and interpretation of songs and arias. The classes provide an excellent
opportunity to gain performing experience in a supportive, environment. A great deal
can also be learned from observing others.
Each two-hour session gives six singers the opportunity to perform a piece of their
choice to colleagues and observers. I then work closely with each singer on specific
aspects of presentation. Singers may present operatic arias, art songs, oratorio,
music theatre pieces, jazz or traditional songs.
