Katharina Megli

Cambridge Singing Teacher    Opera & Performance Coach    Choral Director

‘Katharina uses her considerable experience in an approach that is both thorough and professional. She explains in detail the ways in which many aspects, chiefly posture and breathing, provide the framework necessary to produce the sound I am looking for. The lessons have been challenging, maybe even daunting at times (new things often are), but always enjoyable. Since working with Katharina I have found singing much more comfortable, less strained, and my range is improving as we explore new techniques and ideas. It is difficult to explain the excitement or enjoyment of producing previously elusive sounds or notes almost without realising it. I am sure there is still much more to learn.’  Andrew bass

‘I took classes under Katharina for two and a half  years while studying toward a PhD at the University of Cambridge. I had before that studied classical singing in Finland at the conservatories of Turku and Helsinki. Katharina immediately detected certain fundamental problems with my technique that we then set out to remedy.  My singing is now considerably less strained, and I can easily get through lengthy songs that used to make me feel exhausted toward the end.’   Visa Kurki  bass-baritone

‘Working with Katharina has been a revelation. Through her teaching my voice has transformed and continues to transform. She is a consummate musician and highly professional in her approach.  Katharina’s extensive experience as a performer and choir director enhance her teaching. She brings wisdom and insight to her work.

She is able to teach the many principles of good singing with immense care so that they are tailored to the individual. All of this is achieved with her encouragement and a light touch, making lessons challenging and fun. Katharina is passionate about what she does and lessons with her heighten the joy of singing.’     Lucy Bunce  voice and harp

I've been having singing lessons for 18 years, almost without a break, but I can safely say that my lessons with Katharina are the best ever! I've been a choral singer for most of my life and moved towards opera 3 or 4 years ago. I love this style of singing and I'm hoping to become a professional opera singer.

I travel all the way from Leeds to Cambridge to have lessons with Katharina (it's absolutely worth it), so I have two-hour lessons every four to six weeks or so. I learn more than enough in those two hours to last me until the next lesson and we always have a lot of laughs along the way. I leave feeling encouraged and excited to start practisng my new skills. We focus mainly on technique exercises in lessons and implement those techniques into the arias I'm working on if there's time. It's fine if there's not time, though, as Katharina also runs regular masterclasses, which are wonderfully informative, interactive and encouraging. I've learned so much in the short time I've been having lessons with Katharina and I'm thrilled about it.’  Esther

‘I have been taking singing lessons with Katharina for a number of years now and my voice has benefitted hugely. Previous singing teachers worked with me on a more superficial level, but Katharina has taken me on a much more profound journey, helping me to really understand the physical processes at work when I sing, the mental stumbling blocks created by years of unexamined practice, and the way that true musical freedom and enjoyment can arise once physical and mental issues have been addressed. She is endlessly patient and supportive, encouraging me to adopt an attitude of curiosity towards my voice and the way it is developing - while never accepting less than complete focus and dedication. She is a seemingly never-ending source of useful vocal exercises but is also supremely musical, helping me to tease out profound levels of meaning in the repertoire I am studying and express these in my singing. Thanks to her I have become both a better singer and a much better musician.’ Meggie Hiley Kroeger
